“Forgiveness and Letting Go”
You might have heard of the expression by 17th century poet Alexander Pope, “To err is human, to forgive divine.” Confessing wrong doing and making restitution has its roots in the Hebrew Bible (i.e., the Old Testament). Most world religions advise it is essential to admit wrong doing and some also advise making restitution. In our modern world, we recognize that forgiving others for the harm we have done is essential for mental, and sometimes physical, health. While it sounds like an easy thing to do, it can actually be complex, fraught with guilt perhaps, or hurtful memories. In a New Year, it can be a good time to reflect on whether apologies are due to others (as Jews do annually) and to address whether or how we can…
